What is a Triathlon?

A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event consisting of three sequential disciplines: swimming, cycling, and running. Getting into triathlon involves several steps, from understanding the sport to training and participating in your first event. Here is a guide to help you get started:

  1. Understand the Basics

Ensure to familiarise yourself with the structure and rules of triathlon. Learn about the different race distances and what each leg of the race entails.

  1. Choose a Distance

As a keen triathlete myself, I would suggest starting with a shorter distance race, such as a super sprint or a sprint triathlon as these are easier to train for a don’t require as much time to train for. Doing the shorter distances will help you to gain experience and build up confidence.

Races and Distances:

- Super Sprint Triathlon: 400 Swim, 10k Bike, 2.5k Run

- Sprint Triathlon: 750m Swim, 20k Bike, 5k Run

- Olympic Triathlon: 1500m Swim, 40k Bike, 10k Run

- Half Ironman 70.3: 1900m Swim, 90k Bike, 21.1k Run (Half Marathon)

- Full Ironman: 3900m Swim, 180k Bike, 42.2k Run (Marathon)

  1. Gear Up

Swim Gear: Swimsuit, Goggles, Swim Cap, Wetsuit (for open water swims).

Bike Gear: A road bike or triathlon bike, a helmet, cycling shoes and a repair kit.

Run Gear: Running shoes

Transition Gear: Race belt, towel, any nutrition/hydration items you may need.

Overall Triathlon Gear: Trisuit!!

  1. Find a Training Plan

Follow a structured training plan tailored to your fitness level and the distance you aim to race. Training plans typically include:

  • Swimming: Focus on technique, endurance, and open water skills.
  • Cycling: Build stamina, strength, and bike handling skills.
  • Running: Develop your endurance and pacing.
  • Bricks: Combined bike-run workouts to simulate race conditions and practice transitions.
  1. Join a Triathlon Club or Community

Join a triathlon club which can help provide support, training partners and valuable advice from experienced triathletes.

  1. Enter a Race

Choose a race that fits your schedule and fitness level and sign up to the distance that you’ve been training for. Sign up early as popular events can fill up quickly.

  1. Reflect and Plan Ahead

After your race, reflect on what went well and areas for improvement. Use this experience to set new goals and plan for future triathlons.

Triathlons are a rewarding way to challenge yourself and improve your overall fitness. With dedication and proper preparation, you'll be ready to enjoy your first race and many more to come.
