How to Look After Your Wetsuit

How to Look After Your Wetsuit

Congratulations on your new wetsuit investment! Whether you’re a cold-water dipper, casual swimmer or racing at the elite level, your wetsuit is your trusty companion in the open water. However, like any gear, it requires proper care to ensure a long lifespan and for optimal performance. This guide will provide you with aftercare tips to keep your gear in top condition, ready for the next use!

Rinse off after every use:

After swimming in your wetsuit, ensure to rinse it thoroughly with freshwater. Saltwater, sand and chlorine can degrade the neoprene material over time, leading to stiffness and odour. Rinse both the inside and the outside of the wetsuit, paying extra attention to the areas like the zipper and seams where debris tends to accumulate.

Proper Drying Technique:

Once the wetsuit is rinsed thoroughly, it’s important to dry your wetsuit correctly. Ensure to avoid hanging it in the direct sunlight or near a direct heat source, excessive heat can damage the neoprene. Instead, ensure to hang it in a shaded, well-ventilated area, preferable on a wide hanger to maintain its shape. Folding your wetsuit for storage can cause creases that weaken the material, so always hang it flat or on a wide hanger!

Avoid Washing Machines and Wringing the wetsuit at all costs!

Washing machines can damage the neoprene and compromise its insulation properties so avoid using one at all costs! Similarly, avoid wringing out your wetsuit as it can stretch and distort the material. Stick to gentle handwashing!

Store Properly:

Storing your wetsuit properly is key to ensure a long lifespan for the suit. Avoid leaving it crumpled up in a damp bag for a long period of time as this can lead to mould and mildew growth. Instead, keep your wetsuit stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, preferable hanging or laid flat to maintain its shape.

Repair Tears and Snags Promptly:

Even with the utmost care, tears and snags can occur with your aquatic adventures. It’s essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage. Invest in a wetsuit repair kit containing neoprene cement and patches and follow instructions for patching up any damage.

By following these top tips for looking after your wetsuit, you can ensure that your wetsuit remains in peak condition, providing comfort, warmth and protection for countless swims to come!
